Postpartum Essentials
Oct 24, 2023When I was pregnant, I feel like I was so concerned about getting through labor and delivery that I didn’t really plan much for postpartum. If I were to go back, these are things that I would have all ready to go.
(psst: I am linking some specific items and may get a commission if you purchase from my links. You don't need to, but just so you are aware!)
1. A high-quality collagen protein
Collagen is so essential for healing your stretched skin and uterus, especially if you had any tearing in delivery or had a surgical incision like a C-section. Collagen and adequate total protein intake helps ease the tissue repair, but it can be hard to meet the high demands that are needed in postpartum. My favorite supplement is from Needed because you cannot taste it, it blends smoothly into drinks/recipes, and is tested for heavy metals. I do have a discount if you want to try Needed products: LAURAN gets you 20% off!
2. A good and easy breakfast casserole recipe
I can’t stress the importance of having a good breakfast that is going to be quick. When I was in the first couple of weeks right after having my baby, there were some days I wouldn’t get out of bed until noon, and I definitely hadn’t ate anything other than a few crackers up to that point. I started spending one hour each week prepping a breakfast casserole so I could have a hot meal every day. Cut into servings and freeze in individual portions, then I just microwaved it for 2 minutes. This is a go-to recipe that I still make almost weekly and give to any newly postpartum mamas.
3. A large water bottle and electrolytes
Getting fluids in postpartum is so important, especially if you are lactating. Adequate hydration is essential for overall recovery and breastmilk production. Having a large water bottle that I had to refill less often helped me to drink more water. Electrolytes are always helpful for hydrating your body. My favorite ones are from Needed, linked here.
4. Gel nipple covers and silver nipple shields
These are more of a specific thing that help if you are breast-feeding. The silver nipple cups helped with any cracked nipples and I would wear them throughout the day, but at night I would switch to the cooling gel pads. They also felt really nice if you put them in the fridge for a few minutes. They were a real lifesaver for my first month postpartum!
5. Some plan or structure for you meals
This is something that not everybody thinks of. Often times, especially early postpartum, we will skip meals or not have a regular eating pattern because we’re so concerned about feeding the baby. Having a plan set in place (weekly breakfast prep, meal train, etc.), can make a huge difference to your postpartum experience.
