3 Morning Sickness Snacks

Jan 16, 2024

Morning sickness is a blessing and a curse: I'm glad to grow a baby but I wish I wasn't sick! While it may not be completely avoidable, there are some nutrition strategies that can help (or hinder) your morning sickness.

Here are 3 tips/ideas to nourish your body while supporting morning sickness.

  1. Ginger Smoothies

One proven remedy for morning sickness is ginger. It's been used for centuries to alleviate nausea and vomiting. A refreshing ginger smoothie can be a convenient and delicious way to integrate ginger into your diet. Blend together a couple of slices of fresh ginger, a banana for smoothness, and a dash of lemon for added zest. You can also add some greek yogurt or collagen powder for a protein boost.

  1. Protein-Rich Snacks

Protein is known to significantly reduce the symptoms of morning sickness. A protein-rich snack, like a handful of nuts, jerky (yes, it's safe), or a hard-boiled egg, can be a great option to keep the nausea at bay. These foods are not only rich in protein, but also contain other essential nutrients needed during pregnancy. Other ideas include greek yogurt/cottage cheese, nut butter, cheese, and crispy chickpeas which I personally survived on in my last pregnancy.

  1. Crackers and Cheese

The traditional remedy of crackers and cheese can also be a lifesaver when it comes to easing morning sickness. The blandness of the crackers combined with the protein from the cheese can help to neutralize stomach acid and keep nausea in check. Opt for whole grain crackers and a mild cheese for a healthy, nutrient-packed snack. Crackers by themselves may seem more appetizing, but a blood sugar spike from carbs can make nausea worse. Do try to follow up your crackers with some protein like the cheese.

Many moms that I've worked with struggle with severe nausea and fatigue, aversions and cravings, and so many pregnancy symptoms. They don't realize that many nutrition related things can make those symptoms worse and are unintentionally making themselves feel sicker. We get to the root cause of their symptom (besides the hormone changes of course), and work together to THRIVE in pregnancy. You can check out my program video HERE for more information.
